A vest i did for my construction class, I used canvas as the fabric and synthetic dyes to create the coloring of the fabric. For the sides of the vest I used the batik (with bees wax) as the dying resistant method. Following the guides and a little freedom to experiment, this was a fun project. Being able to play around with materials and methods is most definitely a relief and a pay of the work that was demanded, it reminds me why I enjoy to do what I do.
Walking, biking, talking, what ever action that involves ing...inspiration is found everywhere at any time. Here is a space where I occasionally share how I perceive my surroundings.

DINA KNAPP @ MIA Gallery, Florida.
A journey within a journey. As I was rushing on time, on a journey from one piece of land to another. I encountered an exhibition that illustrated my mind, a retrospective on Dina Knapp's work : Sewn Dreams, 1971-2011. Knapp's use of materials was what caught my attention at first sight, as I share some interest for layering and found plastic objects in my own work.
Weight of the world. Heavy load, a play with words and imagery, the title integrated within the work. It is interesting when texting plays an elemental role in a work. It works with this piece, the imagery complements the title, and if the text were not present the work would still be in context, but as a viewer I might have a different reaction. Beyond that, let us not carry the weight of the world, it goes something agains the laws of physics, and some laws are not meant to be broken. It is not about worrying about the world it is about being aware, and doing your own thing. It is about little actions, such as this work, that share a voice, a concern, state something and share it. Cause it works in some form of chain reaction. In some strange way everything seems to be connected.
Though I was most interested in the plastic collages, Knapp works with other medias, particularly crocheting. She has been creating wearable art for a time now, and some individuals such as Bob Marley have been admirers and wearers of her creations.

It all comes down to a transitory. Journey.
I found myself looking out a window and down into a city, pondering how I got to be seated, belted, and up in the air. Time and space are quite curious, it dazzles me beyond comprehension. I find it curiouser how we interact with each other passing by, keeping our stories to ourselves, daring at most to share the details of our outer packages.
When it comes to transportation where dozens of strangers come together into compacted areas sharing every molecule breathed, yet sharing nothing at all. I was in an airplane, but this happens in all transportation, especially public. Sharing a destination, and beyond a final destination (also known as grave), yet nothing really shared, all of a sudden our humanity vanishes in value. A fellow human is a stranger, and remains a stranger. Every story, hidden, and distorted. A simple glimpse in the eye, tricks everyone of us into a false belief of what that person could be.
But isn't that itself what makes this journey so intriguing? Discovering.

SkyLab Gallery: Foot Village + Screening
Energy. Not solid nor visible to the superficial senses, but something generated within. It was Foot Village´s drum circle performance this october, in SkyLab gallery, that freshly fed that thing within that I can´t really explain in concise wording. Chaotic rhythms, proudly loud, and a hardcore vitality, the performance was a success having some stand by observers but mostly got the present crowd dancing and moving their heads to the tune in note of appreciation.
A little taste, I recorded with my cell phone so the sound and visual quality is not quite crisp, though I myself am a fan of distortion, I played around, and torched the imagery a tad more.

Windy Wanta. Express visit to Chicago.
We walk through the concrete streets, hypnotized by our daily routines. Unaware of our surroundings and the people around us. It is at times that those strangers we might not acknowledge of their existence, have interesting proposals to offer. From music, to art, dance, and at times even political ideas. What better stage may an artist have than the streets?
A stage, that knows no boundaries and interacts with its public one on one. Here are two occasions within the same day that I encountered in the streets of Chicago.

Sweet Freedom Doses...
I hear spring, I hear break, sweat melodies, & a sweet dose of freedom....
400 Blows, Falling Angles, and J.M. Basquiat: The Radiant Child.
Books I started this week: Just Kids by Patti Smith (loving it), and some Bukowski poems from Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame. Recommend them all.
In an escape to The Book Loft, got my hands on The Idiot by Dostoyvesky, real.m by Alfar, and Publics and Counterpublics by M. Warner. SO eager to read them all, so bon nuit.
Sherrie Gallerie, a three dimensional space
Last month, februrary 2011 Sherrie Gallerie, located in Short North Columbus exhibited the work of the ceramist Kristen Cliffel, which was arranged in a charming manner, suited perfectly for the playful and humorous style of the artist.
It was twenty five years ago when Sherrie Riley Hawkn opened her gallery to the public. Being a fine arts student I am intrigued by the paths within the arts world. I wondered how she selected the work in her space. How does a gallery work, how are the art works selected? Well, in the case of Sherrie Gallerie, it is a specialized gallery, which focuses on showcasing three dimensional works. Cermamic sculptures, both relief and free standing. Yet it is not limited to a media or style, as there is lots to see within the space, but there is a common element in all works. Beyond the quality of the craftsmanship to the constant integration of textural elements.

Who's work will be exhibited this April 1st in Sherrie Gallery.
One thing that I appreciate when visiting Sherrie Gallery is that there is more than a central focus exhibition of the month(s), but the space is shared with other artists and jewelers.
I was watching Olafur Eliasson talk about the realtion and interaction between an individual and the space that it is in, presented with support of art works as evidence. Worth watching if have a bit of free time:

A night @ SkyLab Gallery
Skylab more than a gallery is a home, not only for those who live and work there, but a home for emerging musicians and artists, of course I must mention all of us who are eager to open our eyes, minds, and ears to inspiration. This concept which is inviting and exciting seems to me what all gallery should pursuit to a certain extent. At times the atmosphere of a gallery is left aside and works of art ,which have life of their own, are left to a dull spotlight, isolating it from its belonging context. On the other hand, the times that I have attended to SkyLab events, I feel I can connect with the works around me. The fact that there is not a strong division between presenters and audience allows a kind of click to click.
THE SHARK IS BEAUTIFUL, don't know who did it but it is suspended from the roof above the kitchen area, precise decor when cooking the food chain.
A little taste:
Among the musicians presenting yesterday, february 11, was Mark McGuire. I must say it was a beautiful performance, the way melodies build and evolve , taking my mind into a journey of thoughts and grasped feelings.

I took the photos and video with camera phone, as I don't have one for the moment, that would explain the low resolution. Which to be honest, I really like the aesthetics of it.
